Georgia Secretary of State Speaks to Local Chamber

05/07/2010

The Georgia Secretary of State tells local business owners he sees small businesses as the future.

Brian Kemp spoke to those in attendance at the Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet Thursday at the Georgia Baptist Conference Center.

Kemp said that while large industries are great news, in his opinion, a great deal of economic development moving forward will rely on the small business owners and entrepreneurs of Georgia.

“95 percent of our over 500,000 Georgia corporations have less than 50 employees, so small business is the backbone of the economy and where job growth will come quickest and first as the economy turns,” said Kemp.

He went on to say that it is his opinion that government could use more of a small business mindset and that he is trying to bring that to the Secretary of State’s office.

“I think we need that type of mentality in government right now of entrepreneurship,” said Kemp. “Somebody asked me if this is the next Great Depression or the depression that will make us great and I believe it is the latter.”

Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce President Wendi Bailey said Kemp’s message was a very good one for the local business community to hear.

“As a small business owner himself, he can relate to our membership,” said Bailey.

Kemp also thanked local business owners for investing in the Toccoa-Stephens County community.

Secretary of State Kemp Applauds Georgia House Passage of MOVE Act Legislation

Secretary of State Kemp Applauds Georgia House Passage of MOVE Act Legislation

Atlanta – Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp today applauded the passage of legislation by the Georgia House of Representatives that will strengthen Georgia’s compliance with the federal Military and Overseas Voters Empowerment Act, or MOVE Act. This legislation will increase ballot access for the approximately 200,000 Georgians living or stationed overseas.

“I commend the Georgia House for their overwhelming support of the MOVE Act and Georgia’s military and overseas voters,” said Secretary Kemp. “This legislation utilizes existing technology to ensure that the voices of the men and women who protect our freedoms overseas are heard on Election Day.”

The bill (HB 1073) was introduced by Rep. John Meadows (R – Calhoun), a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, on behalf of the Secretary of State’s office. It passed with a vote of 161-1. Among the bill’s features is a requirement that absentee ballots must be sent to military and overseas voters 45 days prior to a general primary or general election; increased access to absentee ballots for an entire election cycle; and allowing military and overseas voters to receive a blank absentee ballot electronically.

Brian Kemp was sworn in as Secretary of State in January 2010. Among the office’s wide-ranging responsibilities, the Secretary of State is charged with conducting efficient and secure elections, the registration of corporations, and the regulation of securities and professional license holders. The office also oversees the Georgia Archives and the Capitol Museum.

Secretary of State Kemp Announces Support of Legislation to Encourage Increased Voting Participation by Members of Georgia’s Overseas Military Personnel

Secretary of State Kemp Announces Support of Legislation to Encourage Increased Voting Participation by Members of Georgia’s Overseas Military Personnel

Atlanta – Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp today testified before the Georgia House of Representatives Governmental Affairs Committee in support of legislation that would establish a pilot voting project for Georgia’s overseas and military personnel. The pilot voting project would provide overseas and military personnel alternative methods to cast their ballots and have them received by local election officials in time to be counted. Currently, Georgia’s overseas and military personnel are allowed to submit their absentee ballots only by mail.

The bill (HB 665), introduced in the House by Rep. Mark Hamilton (R-Cumming), Chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee, allows the State to participate in any future pilot voting programs, so long as those programs meet certain minimum standards such as: encryption and transmission of information over a secure network; verification of the identity and eligibility of electors to vote;  protection of the privacy, anonymity, and integrity of ballots cast; prevention of tampering or illegal manipulation of the system; and ability to verify that information transmitted over the secure network is not viewed or altered before the vote is received at the vote counting destination.

“This legislation will help ensure that the men and women who fight to protect our Constitution and our freedoms can fully participate in Georgia’s elections,” Secretary Kemp told the committee. “One ballot cast by a member of our military that is not counted due to slow mail service or a missed deadline is one too many.”

“I want to thank Secretary Kemp for his early leadership and support of this issue, and his dedication and commitment to helping Georgia’s military personnel fully participate in our democratic process,” said Rep. Hamilton. “I look forward to continuing to work with Secretary Kemp’s office to develop and implement this much needed resource.”

“This is yet another example of Brian Kemp putting his campaign proposals into action to benefit Georgians," said Campaign Manager Tim Fleming.  "This common sense initiative has such broad support around the state that even our primary opponent supports it.  We thank him for setting aside politics and supporting the work of Secretary Kemp and Representative Hamilton on behalf of our military personnel.”

Kemp Launches CutRedTape.net & Announces job Growth Plan

(Athens) - Brian Kemp, a Republican candidate for Secretary of State, launched a new job growth initiative today as part of his Kemp Means Business Tour of Georgia. Kemp, a successful small business owner and widely respected former State Senator, has made job growth and creation a key priority of his campaign to replace Karen Handel, who is running for Governor.

Said Kemp, "With unemployment over 10% in Georgia, and higher in some areas, the economy is the top concern for every Georgia family.  As Secretary of State, I cannot magically make jobs appear, but I can help lead efforts for new economic development and be an advocate for small businesses at the State Capitol."

"My Job Growth Plan focuses on supporting statewide economic development efforts, streamlining corporate registrations, overhauling all licensing boards and procedures, and championing the needs of small businesses at the Capitol."

"To help do that, I am launching a new website,
CutRedTape.net.   This new site allows citizens, small business owners and business leaders across the state to read my proposed plans and also share their ideas to create new jobs and make government more efficient directly with me.  As Georgia's next Secretary of State, I will use these ideas to work with the Governor and the General Assembly to create new jobs and help every Georgia business grow."

Since announcing his campaign for Secretary of State, Brian Kemp has led the field of candidates from both parties in endorsements, statewide organization, and fundraising with almost 200 endorsements from elected leaders and over $250,000 raised from donors across Georgia.

As a small business owner, widely respected former State Senator, and with his track record in the Senate of cutting red tape, promoting small business growth, and reducing government waste, Brian Kemp is the ideal candidate for the vital office of Secretary of State.

Over his career, Brian Kemp has helped found and develop many small businesses. Today, among his many business interests, he is the owner of Kemp Properties, a small business specializing in real estate investments and property management. An active community leader, Kemp serves on the board of St. Mary's Hospital in Athens.

Kemp served in the Georgia State Senate from 2002-2006, having defeated a Democrat incumbent in one of the most challenging political environments for Republicans in the state. In 2006, Kemp sought the Republican nomination for Agriculture Commissioner. Over the course of that campaign, he raised over $800,000 and built a statewide network of over 300 elected Republican officials and hundreds of grassroots leaders.

A lifelong resident of Athens, Georgia, Brian Kemp is a graduate of Georgia's public schools and the University of Georgia, where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Agriculture.

Kemp, 45, is married to the former Marty Argo of Athens. They are the proud parents of three daughters. The Kemps are active members of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens.

Insider Update - Momentum Boosted by New Initiatives and Straw Poll Victory

MDJ Covers New Stop Voter Fraud Initiative
This week, we launched our new  StopVoterFraud.US and 877.55U.VOTE voter hotline. Marietta Daily Journal covered our announcement. The story can be found clicking here: Kemp Launches Site to Report Voter Fraud

CutRedTape.net & Job Growth Plan a Huge Success for Kemp Campaign
One effort I am particularly proud of is our new Job Growth Plan and Cut Red Tape website. I have created a way for business owners and employees to directly communicate how government can help them or just get out of the way.  I also detailed an ambitious new plan to transform the Secretary of State's office into a job creation leader and small business advocate at the Capitol.

My good friends Martha Zoller and Tim Bryant were nice enough to let me come on their shows and talk about this new initiative.

The response has been overwhelming.  I look forward to sharing this plan and website with voters all across the state. The press has also started paying attention.

Tom Crawford over at CapitolImpact.com filed this report about our efforts:
Kemp Pushes for Job Creation
Brian Kemp, the former state senator from Athens running for secretary of state, is rolling out a job growth proposal as part of his Republican primary campaign.

Kempoglethorpe.jpg
"With unemployment over 10 percent in Georgia and higher in some areas, the economy is the top concern for every Georgia family," Kemp said.  "As secretary of state, I cannot magically make jobs appear, but I can help lead efforts for new economic development and be an advocate for small businesses at the state capitol."

Oglethorpe County Straw Poll an Overwhelming Victory
Saturday afternoon, we headed down the road to Oglethorpe County for the GOP Low Country Boil.  We got to see some old friends and meet some new supporters.  We are happy to report that we won the straw poll with the final vote showing 164-73.  I really appreciate the volunteers who joined us that day and all my friends and supporters in Oglethorpe County.

At the end of the day, what really matters is the polling results on election day, not straw polls. We are building a statewide grassroots network and momentum in every corner of the state.  I am glad to see we have the Oglethorpe GOP as part of the Kemp Means Business Team!

Fundraising Continues
We had a successful fundraiser at the house on Saturday. Special thanks to Billy Bittle, Ken Hodges, Ronnie Hardeman, Freddie Smith, Curt Collier and Jungle Jim Myrick for helping me cook barbeque and hash on Friday.  We were entertained by the voice of my great friend Mike Dekle and really appreciate his support.

We are in the process of planning over a dozen fundraisers in different parts of the state. If you have an interesting in helping with one of these events or hosting your own event, please contact David Dove (david@votebriankemp.com) and he will help you.

As always, thanks for all you are doing to help my campaign!

Insider Update 9/14/09 - Kemp Launches CutRedTape.net and Job Growth Plan

Insider Update 9/14/09 Kemp Campaign Launches New CutRedTape.net Website and Job Growth Plan

Today I unveiled my new Job Growth Plan, a detailed proposal to support statewide economic development efforts, streamline corporate registrations, overhaul all licensing boards and procedures, and champion the needs of small businesses at the Capitol.

With unemployment over 10% in Georgia, and higher in some areas, the economy is the top concern for every Georgia family. As Secretary of State, I cannot magically make jobs appear, but I can help lead efforts for new economic development and be an advocate for small businesses at the State Capitol.

To help do that, I also launched today a new website, CutRedTape.net. This new site allows citizens, small business owners and business leaders across the state to read my proposed plans and also share their ideas to create new jobs and make government more efficient directly with me. As Georgia’s next Secretary of State, I will use these ideas to work with the Governor and the General Assembly to create new jobs and help every Georgia business grow.

Please visit the site and use the Tell A Friend function to email your friends about this new initiative and spread the word!

More Kemp Means Business Tour Stops Across Georgia

On top of preparing and launching our new Job Growth plan, our schedule has been incredibly packed as we have continued to build momentum across the state.

One my good friends and Kemp Means Business County Chair, Kurt Cannon hosted us in Rabun County with a whirlwind tour of community events and visits with local leaders. We had a wonderful time visiting with old and new friends at the Realtor's Association lunch and Homebuilder's Association dinner.

Stops in Gwinnett, Evans, Augusta, and Covington filled the following days. Special thanks to my good friend and supporter Columbia Commissioner Charles Allen, Mark Herbert in Evans, and all of our strong supporters at the Piedmont Beef Cattleman’s Association for their help on the campaign.

The Jasper County GOP held a great event on Friday. Representative Jim Cole, one of my good friends over the years, hosted us at the event and introduced me to a number of people from his district. It is humbling to have so much support from respected legislative leaders like Jim all across the state. It says a lot when leaders like Jim will vouch for you. Thanks Jim!

Saturday was an incredibly busy day! Josh and I started the day off at the North Fulton GOP breakfast. Many thanks to Roger Bonds for putting together a fantastic breakfast. I know all Republicans join me in thanking him for his service to our party. From there we travelled to the Roswell Tea Party and then on to the Forsyth Tea Party. There is a true conservative movement sweeping this land. It is exciting to be a part of it and to be a voice for real change in our country.

After that full day, we headed back to Athens to continue campaigning and hand out our new Dawgs for Kemp stickers at the UGA football game. It turned out to be a great game as the Dawgs pulled out a tough win against South Carolina. Go DAWGS!

We will be back in touch next week. Thank you for all you do to advance our campaign!

Brian Kemp for Secretary of State Insider Update 9/10/09

Brian Kemp for Secretary of State Insider Update 9/10/09

Hello Kemp Means Business Team!
My family and I had a great relaxing Labor Day weekend and I hope that you and your family did as well!  We stayed busy this past week as always, but were fortunate to be able to spend a good bit of it in the office planning campaign events and fundraisers over the next few months.  It is exciting to see the different parts of the campaign coming together.  We'll have some exciting announcements for you soon.

 Kemp Means Business Tour Stops
Though we were in the office most of the week, no week on the campaign trail is complete without at least a few events.

Thursday, my friend Josh Melton was nice enough to invite us to speak at the Athens Jaycees' meeting. I talked about what the Secretary of State's office does and how it relates to them as business owners and employees. After I spoke, we had a question and answer period. They had some really thoughtful questions about the office itself and how it effects them day to day.

KempatJaycess.jpg
Saturday John Hulsey invited me to his opening day dove shoot.  Dove shoots are always a lot of fun and a great way to make new friends.  I even had a chance to visit with Hall County School Board Chairman Richard Higgins and Hall County School Board Vice-Chairman Nath Morris and earn their endorsement of our campaign.  I really appreciate all the elected officials who have gotten behind my campaign.  With their help, we are truly building a statewide grassroots organization.

In The News
The press continues to cover our campaign and comment on how successful we have been in all corners of the state.  Here are links to recent articles about the campaign and our Kemp Means Business Tour around the state.

Brian Kemp for Secretary of State Insider Update 8/31/09

Hello Kemp Means Business Team!
The weeks keep rolling by as we get closer and closer to the primary. We had a busy week this past week and finished it off with a busy Saturday.

Kemp Means Business Tour Stopskemp4.jpg
Joined by my campaign Co-Chair Clay Newman, we attended the Newton County GOP BBQ on Monday. We have great support in Newton County including Senator John Douglas, Representative Doug Holt, Commissioner Tim Fleming and former Commissioner Ester Fleming. There was a really good crowd and it was nice to see Congressman John Linder who stopped by to say hello to everyone and show his support of the event.

Tuesday, Representative Steve Davis was kind enough to invite us to his fundraiser in McDonough. At the event I was able to meet a number of new people as well as see some old friends.

Wednesday I went to the state Elections Board meeting. It was time well spent as I was able to talk with some of the folks there and pick their brains about various issues concerning the Secretary of State's office.

Friday, Representative Mark Hamilton put together a few meet and greets in Cumming, GA. We started with breakfast and went through lunch all the while having different groups come and go. We are thankful to Brian and Kelly Tam for their hospitality while in their restaurant, Tam's Backstage, where we ate breakfast and lunch.

Following lunch, Senator Chuck Clay and Josh Mackey assembled a group of people together for us to meet in Marietta. From there, Senator Clay and Josh took us around the square in Marietta and introduced us to a number of people. These are the kinds of things that keep our campaign moving in the right direction.

Saturday was a full day complete with a trip to Perry to attend the Governor's 6th annual Fish Fry. After seeing some supporters down there we hit the road heading up to the Dekalb County GOP BBQ. Both were great events where we were able to meet new people and continue spreading our message.

We had 20 volunteers make the trip with us to Perry and 14 of those 20 went to both Perry and to Dekalb! Winning campaigns must have folks willing to help out with all kinds of things and we are fortunate to have volunteers who will do just that!

Thanks again for all you do. Our campaign's success up to this point is due to you.

Brian Kemp for Secretary of State Insider Update 8/24/09

Hello Kemp Means Business Team!
The Kemp Means Business Tour had yet another great week out on the campaign trail. Our campaign continues to build momentum across the state!

Kemp Means Business Tour Stops
Joining business and community leaders from across Georgia, we attended the Georgia Chamber Congressional Luncheon in Perry this past week. The crowd of thousands of chamber leaders and local officials from across Georgia joined by many of our key supporters from the area including Dave Cyr and County Commission Chairman Ned Sanders greeted us warmly. We received a lot of feedback that our campaign is leading the pack.

While in Houston County, my good friend and old roommate from my time in the Senate, Senator Ross Tolleson, took us around town. We met with a number of local elected officials, Republican party leaders, community leaders and small business owners. To name a few, we met with the folks at Davis Oil, Two Friends, Coldwell Banker, Tolleson Lumber Company and Edgewood Development Group. We added a number of new Kemp Means Business Team Members that day!

The following day we hopped on I-75 and headed south to Cordele where we had a meet and greet hosted by another good friend Buddy Leger. The meet and greet was a great opportunity for us to visit with some old and new supporters who are really excited about the campaign.

Saturday, David and I went to the Columbia County GOP breakfast and met with a great crowd of people while Josh went to the Banks County Republican Breakfast. It was really good to see everyone. After the breakfast in Columbia we had a meeting with a group of local leaders working to put together a fund-raiser in east Georgia.

Winning campaigns always have groups of dedicated supporters across the state. It is humbling and exciting to see so many enthusiastic supporters across Georgia.

In the News
While in Perry we were interviewed by a reporter who writes for a number of papers in central and south central Georgia. He assured us his article will be in all 5 papers that cover 4 counties. When those articles are published I will be sure to send them along.

At WSST-TV 55, the T.V. station in Cordele, we were on "Mid-Day Magazine" with Phillip Streetman who has been in broadcasting for 47 years! It was great for him to let us be on his show. We also met with the Cordele Dispatch and will be in an upcoming addition of the paper.

Earned media opportunities like these are continuing to play a major role in our campaign.

Thanks again for all you do. Our campaign's success so far is because of your support.

Brian Kemp for Secretary of State Insider Update 8/19/09

Hello Kemp Means Business Team!
Another week has flown by! We were on the road a good bit of last week and had the chance to meet and talk with a number of friends and supporters.

kemp3.jpgKemp Means Business Tour Stops
The good folks of northwest Georgia rolled out the red carpet for us when we came to visit for a couple days last week. While there, we had a meet and greet at "Worley's Outback" organized by my good friend Senator Jeff Mullis. During the "get-together", I was able to talk with and earn the endorsements of some more local elected officials.

From there, we went out into the community and made a few stops. We went to the county government office in Catoosa County and talked with a number of the county employees. In addition, we stopped at a few local small businesses and talked with the folks there about various concerns they had directly affected by the Secretary of State's office.

After doing a radio show Thursday morning we made the drive from Dade County, GA to Henry County, GA! It was a long drive, but well worth it for the good lunch event we were able to attend with the Republican Women of Henry County. They had a good crowd there and were appreciative of my common sense approach to the Secretary of State's office.

In the News
While in Northwest GA we were fortunate enough to be on the Judy O'Neal show Wednesday night. The show is carried by UCTV and serves both Walker and Catoosa counties. It was a pleasure to be on the show and to be able to talk with Judy and Keith about my campaign and ideas for the Secretary of State's office.

Thursday morning, as I mentioned earlier, I was on the radio with Evan and Don on the K-WIN morning show in Trenton. They interviewed me about my campaign and what I hope to do when elected.

We continue to use earned media to spread our message throughout the state.

Again, thanks so much for being on board with my campaign. Don't hesitate to let me or the campaign staff know if you need anything.

Victory in 2010,

Brian Kemp for Secretary of State Insider Update 8/10/09 Greetings Kemp Means Business Team!
Welcome to the next edition of our weekly "Insider Update." We have been busy and I want to update you on our progress.

kemp2.jpgKemp Means Business Tour Stops
This past week we had a great time making our way through Northeast Georgia with my good friend State Senator Jim Butterworth. We had lunch in Franklin County with our county chair David Phillips and some local elected officials.

Then we headed to Habersham County making stops to meet with several different groups in and around Cornelia. We talked mostly to these folks about job creation and economic development in this part of the state. We ended the day by speaking to a great crowd at the Towns County GOP where I was able to share my vision for the Secretary of State's office. On this trip we earned the endorsements from more local elected officials and secured the help of many other grassroots leaders.

Last Saturday, the Kemp Team including Marty and the girls attended the GOP BBQ in Barrow County. The Barrow County folks helped to get me elected when I first ran for the State Senate and they are now ready to help me be Georgia's next Secretary of State and for that we are very grateful. Many thanks to the Barrow County GOP for putting on a great event!

In the News
After seeing some of our good friends and supporters in Gainsville last week Martha Zoller was kind enough to allow me to share my vision for the office of Secretary of State on her radio talk show. A recording of this interview is supposed to be up on the following website at some point in the near future if you would like to listen.
Me on the Martha Zoller radio show

What's Next?
The Kemp Means Business Tour is headed to Northwest Georgia for a meet and great with my good friend State Senator Jeff Mullis and several of our other legislative supporters in that area. Following our Northwest Georgia tour, we are headed back to Henry County for a Republican Women's luncheon.

We are rolling along and thanks again for all your help with the campaign.

Hello Kemp Means Business Team!
Beginning this week, I will be sending to you a regular update of all that is going on with the campaign. Your support and hard work is the key to our success and I want to make sure you are "in the loop" as if you were in the campaign headquarters every day.

kemp1.jpgKemp Means Business Tour Stops
Last Saturday, the Kemp Means Business Tour made a stop at the Republican Rally in Rome. The speakers and attendees made it a great event. Senator Isakson was among those in attendance and delivered a great speech on health care and how significant this issue is to Georgia's families.

It's great to have Johnny working so hard for us up in DC. I'm honored to run on the ticket he will head up and to call him a friend.

Two weeks ago, we attended two events in North Georgia. First, we had a great reception at the GOP breakfast in Rome. The folks there were very supportive and ready to get involved in the campaign! Here is an article about our visit in the Rome News-Tribune.

We also had a great time at the 9th District GOP BBQ held in Gilmer County where I was able to meet and talk with a number of supporters. Congratulations to Doug Grammer who is the new 9th District GOP chair!
